60 Seconds with … Bob Lane, president and CEO of the ACHCA

Robert "Bob" Lane

Q: You’ve recently brought back ACHCA’s Nursing Home Administrator Certification program. How much interest has there been?

A: The credentials are for leaders in post-acute care who wish to assess their mastery of advanced practice content. The domains of practice are the same as those used for licensure, but the complexity level is much higher. Members have shown a lot of interest, particularly in the months before the launch at the 56th Annual Conference and Expo in April.

Q: What is the program about?

A: The certification exam includes a 100-question “core” exam, along with the option of two lines of service, one each for skilled nursing and assisted living. The Certified Nursing Homes Administrator exam is based off the blueprint of the ACHCA Certification Committee. Subject matter experts also contributed to the development of the exam. It also incorporates the four areas of practice set out by the National Association of Boards of Examiners. These are Care Services and Supports; Operations; Environment and Quality; and Leadership and Strategy. Each exam consists of 50 questions.

Q: How can the credentialing system help to drive improvements across the industry and in individual buildings?

A: These credentials represent a high level of expertise. The exam provides a roadmap for the professional development of the individual and helps them identify areas where they need to continue their education. Administrators who are at the top level of their licensing can have a positive impact on the communities they lead. Payors will benefit from better results and more cost-effective care.
