Calibration

Once your 3D printer is assembled, you must ensure it’s correctly calibrated. Although many printers are already calibrated, they can be shifted during shipping. Consult the manual to find out how to calibrate it.

Loading filament

It’s like the ink in an inkjet. It’s what a 3D printer needs to print. The majority of 3D printers have presets for loading and unloading the filament. The nozzle must be heated up to a temperature that is different depending on the filament.  

The printing bed can be levelled

The printing bed must be square and level because if it isn’t, you won’t get the desired results from your printer. The nozzle must be placed approximately 0.5 millimeters away from the bed. You can place a sheet of paper beneath the nozzle to ensure that it is separated properly. If you feel mild resistance as you move it around, it’s perfectly positioned.

Printer head movement

Move the head of the printer along each axis. If it moves smoothly, you’re good to go, but if you feel any irregularity, you may need to lubricate one of the moving parts, such as the metal rods. However, it’s best to consult the manual for further information because troubleshooting and suitable lubrication types vary across models.

3D files

Once you’ve set up the technical side of things, you’re ready to start printing. However, you’ll need a 3D model file first. Tinkercad makes it simple to create 3D models on CAD software. Search the web for 3D pre-made models.

Slicing

For a 3D file to be ready for printing, a slicer program or g code is required. The program separates the 3D model into layers, and generates mechanical instructions containing data such as printing speeds and temperatures, so that the 3D printer may mold the model layer by layer.

Cleaning the printing bed

The molded material won’t stick to the printing bed if it’s dirty or greasy. Use isopropyl alcohol to wipe down the printing head, and if necessary, a glue stick can help you get the first layer of your new project to stick if the smooth surface of the bed isn’t cooperating.

Keep the nozzle clean

The nozzle openings will widen as you continue to use your printer. If they become clogged, it can significantly reduce the printing accuracy, so it’s best to clean the nozzle’s exterior with a brass brush whenever you can and invest in spare nozzles.

Don’t clog the printer

Avoid letting the filament uncoil as this can cause a knot which could cause the printer to jam. Use a dust-sponge to remove any dust or grease from the tip of filament before inserting it into the extruder.
