Recipients of AMUG 2024 3D printing scholarships announced

The Additive Manufacturing Customers Group (AMUG) has introduced the recipients of its two 3D printing scholarship’s as Alex Campbell and Phil Rufe.

The awardees can be acknowledged by the additive manufacturing group on the 2024 AMUG convention at Hilton Chicago between March 10-14, 2024. Campbell and Rufe will take to the stage on March 12 to share their tales and talk about their work.

Campbell is a fourth-year aerospace engineering pupil at Ohio State College (OHU), and has been awarded the Man E. Bourdeau Scholarship for college students in additive manufacturing. Rufe, an Assistant Professor within the College of Engineering at Jap Michigan College (EMU), obtained the Randy Stevens Scholarship for educators in additive manufacturing.

Each AMUG scholarships search to acknowledge college students and educators who show a ardour and imaginative and prescient for additive manufacturing to advance each schooling and {industry}.

“The recipients of the scholarships embody a deep-seated enthusiasm for additive manufacturing that originated a few years in the past and has endured over time,” commented Rajeev Kulkarni, Chair of the AMUG Scholarship Committee.

“Moreover, the committee acknowledged their aspirations to problem and enhance established practices, accompanied by proactive efforts to rework these into actuality. Via their mentorship initiatives, they encourage others to contribute to international change.”

Kulkarni added that the excessive caliber of this yr’s scholarship submissions left a constructive impression on the AMUG scholarship committee. “As annually passes, choosing probably the most excellent scholarship recipients turns into progressively difficult, reflecting the exceptional developments throughout the additive manufacturing {industry},” Kulkarni stated.

The Man E. Bourdeau Scholarship

Based to honor the reminiscence of AMUG supporter and advocate Man E. Bourdeau, this scholarship is awarded yearly to a school pupil in recognition of their contribution to 3D printing in schooling.

Funded by New Jersey-based CAD/CAM reseller Cimquest, the award offers AMUG 2024 to permit the chosen pupil to entry shared data on the occasion and develop {industry} contacts. Along with free registration, the scholarship covers all AMUG-related journey and lodging bills.

Campbell’s introduction to additive manufacturing got here within the type of a MakerBot 3D printer in center college. What started as a pastime quickly grew to become a full-time tutorial ardour, with 3D printing now “an integral facet” of his skilled id.

Now pursuing an aerospace engineering diploma at OHU, Campbell hopes to maneuver into the aerospace {industry} to advance the manufacture of rocket engines or apply clever design to next-generation propulsion methods. Campbell has particularly recognized the potential provided by additive manufacturing for the manufacturing of combustion chambers and injectors.

In OHU’s Heart for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME), Campbell at the moment is an undergraduate analysis assistant within the metallic additive manufacturing lab. The coed  has since gained intensive expertise in LPBF, EBM, SLA, and FDM applied sciences. He’s additionally the challenge supervisor of OSU’s liquid engine challenge within the Buckeye House Launch Initiative.

Away from OSU, Campbell accomplished an internship at ADDMAN Group firm Castheon, the place he developed validation and verification processes, aided the set up of an SLM 280 HL, discovered the additive manufacturing course of, and labored with niobium C-103 materials.

Cameron Gygi, Lead Engineer for OSU’s Heart for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME), stated: “Alex has persistently showcased his dedication, proficiency, and problem-solving acumen. Alex stands out for his self-starting means and eagerness to deal with and clear up complicated issues. His management is clear not solely in his work ethic but additionally in his mentorship of his friends.”

The Randy Stevens Scholarship

The Randy Stevens Scholarship is financially supported by Minnesota-based manufacturing service bureau In’Tech Industries. The award honors the reminiscence of Randy Stevens, AMUG supporter and advocate, for his dedication and contribution to the additive manufacturing {industry}.

The annual scholarship goals to acknowledge one high-school instructor or faculty professor for his or her contribution to 3D printing in schooling {and professional} growth. As with the Man E. Bourdeau Scholarship, this award provides free entry to AMUG 2024 and covers associated bills.

Professor Rufe is a Licensed Manufacturing Engineer with levels in mechanical engineering, manufacturing and schooling, who now teaches within the College of Engineering at EMU.

Rufe leads programs in manufacturing processes, industrial operations, CAD mechanics, GD&T, lean manufacturing, mental property design for meeting (DFMA), and additive manufacturing. Moreover, the EMU professor manages the college’s 3D printing/AM lab.

“Primarily based on my analysis, AM is a software with all kinds of purposes and a various viewers. Whereas a devoted 3D printing class is nice, it alone doesn’t meet the wants of a various set of purposes or audiences,” commented Rufe. “Shifting paradigms and offering AM schooling to college students outdoors of the standard dedicated-course mannequin is a problem.”

In his position as an educator, Rufe has been acknowledged for making additive manufacturing accessible, whereas offering steering on 3D printing processes, benefits, disadvantages, and concerns. His insights embody making ready information for 3D printing, and understanding the price, time, and high quality concerns related to additive manufacturing.

Dr. Vijay Mannari, Interim Director of the College of Engineering at EMU, said that “Professor Rufe has supplied sturdy management in selling and integrating 3D printing/additive manufacturing throughout the College of Engineering at EMU.”

“Professor Rufe has built-in 3D printing, in some type, into lots of our engineering and engineering expertise majors and courses,” added Mannari. “Moreover, he has initiated and maintained sturdy industrial partnerships leading to industry-relevant schooling and tools for our engineering college students.”

Earlier AMUG scholarship recipients

The AMUG 2021 scholarships went to Sean Dobson and John Sorvillo.

A College of Cincinnati Ph.D. pupil, Dobson obtained the Man E. Bourdeau Scholarship. Previous to his Ph.D, Dobson interned at Gulfstream Aerospace’s 3D printing lab and accomplished a analysis undergraduate diploma on the College of Louisville. His later research noticed him concentrate on supplies science on the College of Cincinnati. Dobson has additionally labored as an Additive and Materials Engineer for 3D printing service supplier Vertex Manufacturing.

“He has been an incredible asset to Vertex Manufacturing. The fervour that Sean reveals for this discipline of labor each day is inspiring, even for these of us who share the identical ardour,” said Vertex Manufacturing CEO Greg Morris.

The 2021 Randy Stevens scholarship went to Sorvillo, Director of Westwood Preparatory Academy in Youngstown, Ohio. Right here, college students are in residential care and lots of are with out familial provisions. Sorvillo’s efforts noticed the variety of 3D printers on the academy enhance from one to 4, serving to to increase the educating of life-skills and technical competencies, resembling CAD design.

“Our 3D printing program has performed an enormous position in creating inspiration,” stated Sorvillo. “We’re capable of present at-risk college students a complete new approach of studying. This expertise has opened avenues of educating that we by no means imagined. We’re capable of positively influence many aspects of our college students’ lives.”
